Whether they are at home, school, or out in the community, children are affected by their surroundings. This professional can determine the frequency range the individual can hear using equipment and a sound stimulus. It’s also important to seek out evaluation from an audiologist. They can then provide tools and strategies to support those auditory preferences. An OT can complete a sensory preferences profile using specific tests, interviews, and checklists as well as assessments to discover sensory preferences. One such tool in an individual’s toolbox is the occupational therapy practitioner. How to test for auditory sensitivityīecause auditory preferences are so individualized, it’s important to seek out testing, particularly when the sensory preference impacts daily functioning or learning. It simply means that the individual has that particular sensory preference.ĭiagnoses that may have sound preferences:Īuditory hypersensitivity can be present in other diagnoses as well. A noise sensitivity can lead to discomfort in the ears as well as repercussions throughout the whole body as a result of anxiety, worry, overwhelm, and hyperawareness of auditory input. Individuals who have auditory sensitivity may hear loud sounds that cause them pain when, in actuality, no sound has occurred. ![]() Hyperesthesia symptoms vary, depending on which of the five senses are affected symptoms also range from mild to severe. Hyperesthesia also includes both allodynia and hyperalgesia. When touch is affected, it is referred to as tactile sensitivity. For example, heightened sensitivity to sound is called auditory sensitivity. When only one sense is heightened, it is often categorized into a specific hyperesthesia. In some cases, only one sense is affected in other cases, all senses are affected. Depending on which sense is affected, this hypersensitivity can cause pain. Hyperesthesia presents as a heightened sensitivity to any of the five basic senses: sound, sight, taste, touch and smell.
